(Biblical reflections for Sunday, March 5, 2017).
What is the first temptation?
The following is the first temptation: The tempter tells men, “command that these stones become loaves of bread” (Matthew 4:3). And that is precisely what those who pursue the wealth of the world do. They appropriate for themselves the wealth produced for the common good, and accumulate it for their own selfish interests. He who pursues the wealth of the world turns into his what belongs to everybody, and appropriates for himself the “loaves of bread” as if they were “stones” turned into bread. The one who appropriates for himself the bread produced by others, eats the bread without working, just as the one who commands the stones to become loaves of bread, also eats without working.
HOW TO DEFEAT THE FIRST TEMPTATION?
This is how you can defeat of the first temptation. Man “does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Unity, peace, justice, and love of neighbor are the words that come out of the mouth of God. They are the true food that makes men develop and grow. Once people take such food, they will be able to use material wealth in accordance with its true purpose, which is to serve the needs of all.
