A VISION OF GOD

A TRIBUTE TO ALL MOTHERS
Seventh Sunday of Easter)
Sunday, May 13, 2018

In order to see God, all a person needs to do is to look at his fellow human beings. Our neighbor is the likeness and image of God.

The visible love of God

A mother loves her child because he is as much her image as he is the image of God himself. A mother knows that her child is as much her creation as the creation of God. That is why she loves both of them, respects them, cares for them, does everything in her power for them.
Why is God in our neighbor?
God is in our neighbor because God relates to us through our neighbor. And this is the way God relates to us: he makes himself one of us. Therefore, if we love our neighbors, we love the God who is in them.
To know God loves us is to know God is in us: “We have come to know and believe in the love of God for us” (1 John 4:16). Thus, we see God, not so much through our fellow human beings, but rather in them.
The failure of a person (or a nation) to see God in our neighbor produces in us two effects:
1. We live without God; that is, we exclude God from our life.
2. We replace God with something else: we make our own gods – the god of wealth, of power, of prestige, of indifference, and many others gods.

Private isolation

3. We resort to isolationism, which shields us from seeing the harm our indifference causes to our neighbor, which blinds us from seeing the harm we cause to others, which allows us to live a private life, to possess everything in private with exclusion from everybody else.
