What is the second temptation?
The following is the second temptation: The tempter tells people, “Throw [yourselves] down… For [God] will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone” (Matthew 4:6). In other words, the tempter tells them, “Throw yourselves behind policies that perpetuate division and injustice, for God will not allow any harm to befall you.” And that is precisely what those who promote injustice do. They perpetuate division and injustice under the assumption that God will not permit their destruction.
How to defeat the second temptation?
The defeat of the second temptation. You must “not put the Lord, your God, to the test” (Matthew 4:7). That is to say, we cannot expect God to tolerate our abusive power. For the time will come when those who fail to change their abusive ways, will meet with their own obliteration.
